Duration of appendix irritation

introduction

Irritation of the appendix occurs acutely and can cause severe discomfort within a very short time.
The appendix irritation is divided into two forms, the simple and the destructive (decomposing) form of the appendix irritation. Simple appendicitis initially leads to inflamed appendix tissue. However, the inflammation can resolve spontaneously. Therefore one speaks of an irritation.

Stages of appendix irritation

One also speaks of "catarrhal stage". If the appendix irritation does not subside, it follows seropurulent stagein which the inflammation is pronounced and festers. The destructive stage is ultimately life-threatening as a dangerous intestinal rupture can occur. The destructive stage of appendicitis is often referred to simply as appendicitis.

Duration of the entire illness

A simple appendix irritation usually only lasts a few hours to a day at most.
If the inflammation becomes stronger and does not resolve, the seropurulent stage develops, which can last 24 to 48 hours. If left untreated, it is followed by destructive appendicitis, which becomes life-threatening after 48 hours of the entire duration of the disease. Appendicitis does not have to be classic. This means that appendicitis irritation can last for several days. Occasionally, irritation of the appendix is chronic and causes symptoms several times a year or even permanently.

Duration of symptoms

In the case of simple irritation of the appendix, the symptoms usually only last a few hours to a day. Sometimes irritation of the appendix even lasts for several days. If this is the case, symptoms can be felt over the entire period. Severe abdominal pain can occur throughout the duration of the illness. Concomitant symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting can last for up to 24 hours or several days. Often the temperature rises somewhat as the disease progresses. In rare cases, irritation of the appendix can become chronic and cause repeated or permanent pain.

Length of sick leave

In the case of irritation of the appendix, the length of the sick leave depends on the duration of the illness. Often, simple irritation of the appendix is self-limiting. Most family doctors write sick people for at least two days. Since appendicitis is at risk of appendicitis, patients are usually called back the next day. If a serious appendicitis develops, which needs to be treated surgically, the person affected is admitted to the hospital and usually on sick leave for another week after the operation. The length of the sick leave therefore depends on the course of the appendix irritation and complications.

Duration of medication use

Mild to moderate irritation of the appendix is often treated with antibiotics. Depending on the antibiotic, the medication is taken for between 3 and 10 days. Simple appendix irritations, however, are often self-limiting and do not require treatment.

When can I start exercising again?

If there is a simple irritation of the appendix that lasts only a few hours and heals without consequences, there is usually no concern. It is advisable to rest for a few days and then take on the sport slowly. If the irritation of the appendix develops into pronounced appendicitis, which must be treated with medication or surgery, a longer break in sports is advisable. After an operation, you should avoid sport for six weeks and then slowly train again.

Duration of chronic appendix irritation

Chronic irritation of the appendix is not limited to a defined period of time. Chronic irritation of the appendix occurs repeatedly or even permanently. Chronic irritation of the appendix often takes place over several years in short acute phases. This means that the symptoms keep recurring for a short period of time and usually subside after a few hours.
