Sudeck's disease on the foot

General

Under the term Sudeck's disease one understands a complex regional pain syndrome, which classically runs in three stages. Eventually, in the final stage, there is one atrophy (Regression) of bone and Soft tissues; Joints, skin, tendons and muscles shrink, causing loss of the Mobility comes. In the context of Sudeck's disease, at least one joint is always affected, usually on hand or foot. The exact cause of this disease has not yet been conclusively clarified, but it is noticeable that it is increasing Operations or Injuries, for underlying diseases of the nerves, the thyroid or des Heart or when taking certain Medication occurs.

Symptoms

In the field of lower extremity Sudeck's disease manifests itself most often foot; knee or hip are affected much less often. In addition to (often not exactly localizable) intense burning pain and Hypersensitivity In the corresponding skin regions, a main symptom of Sudeck's disease is the change in the tissue. Affected areas are often unusual colored, swollen and or overheated, tend to overproduce Sweat. By stiffening the joint, it can become uncontrollable Tremble and or lack of mobility up to Signs of paralysis come.
If Sudeck's disease occurs on the foot, the biggest problem for those affected is that they can often no longer walk properly. Pain is usually permanent, but intensified when it occurs, shoes often no longer fit due to the swelling and the stiffening of the joint means that the foot can no longer roll properly when walking. As a result, patients are severely restricted in their everyday life.

Appointment with ?

I would be happy to advise you!

Who am I?
My name is dr. Nicolas Gumpert. I am a specialist in orthopedics and the founder of .
Various television programs and print media report regularly about my work. On HR television you can see me every 6 weeks live on "Hallo Hessen".
But now enough is indicated ;-)

Athletes (joggers, soccer players, etc.) are particularly often affected by diseases of the foot. In some cases, the cause of the foot discomfort cannot be identified at first.
Therefore, the treatment of the foot (e.g. Achilles tendonitis, heel spurs, etc.) requires a lot of experience.
I focus on a wide variety of foot diseases.
The aim of every treatment is treatment without surgery with a complete recovery of performance.

Which therapy achieves the best results in the long term can only be determined after looking at all of the information (Examination, X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, etc.) be assessed.

therapy

The main aim of therapeutic measures is to improve the mobility of the joint and, ideally, to restore it completely. Both Medication, physical activities (physiotherapy, Electrotherapy) as well as Nerve blocks are used. These procedures are used to Pain relief, because local anesthesia reduces or switches off the pain perception of the affected nerves.
For Sudeck's disease on the foot, the Sciatic nerve blocked. Since this nerve (the largest-caliber nerve in the entire body!) Also carries vegetative fibers (i.e. fibers that control various body processes, including blood circulation), there is also an inhibition of pain Vasodilation and thereby an increased blood flow to the diseased area with a positive effect on the pain

physical therapy

Since the individual symptoms in a present Sudeck's disease foot The therapy is also adapted to the individual.

The illness can vary between slightly perceptible symptoms and a pronounced feeling of illness and severe impairments. Of the physical therapy is ascribed an important role in the treatment of Sudeck's disease foot. The so-called lymph drainage can effectively reduce the accumulation of lymph fluid which can easily accumulate on the foot.
By removing the accumulated lymph fluid, symptoms of the disease can be removed and the healing process can be positively influenced. The metabolism of the treated body region is stimulated by the lymphatic drainage. Lymphatic drainage should therefore be considered, especially if edema occurs on the foot and lower leg. After a comprehensive diagnosis, it is best to discuss with the attending physician whether lymphatic drainage makes sense in individual cases.

Occupational therapy for Sudek's disease

So-called occupational therapy plays an important role in the treatment of Sudeck's foot disease. Occupational therapy treats the affected foot in different ways and takes into account the individual limitation that the patient experiences due to the disease.
Occupational therapy can help almost everyone with Sudeck's disease.
Movement restrictions especially those with a Sudeck's disease foot should be prevented through the use of occupational therapy. Certain movement patterns that are unconsciously trained due to pain should also be reduced through exercises in occupational therapy and thus possible secondary diseases avoided.

Active movement sequences help prevent this progression of the disease. Care should be taken to support muscle building through active movements, as muscle loss through passive movements can worsen the disease.

The preparation of special aids is also part of the occupational therapy treatment and should help the person concerned to carry out everyday activities as usual despite the illness.
