Retterspitz®

Introduction / What is it?

Retterspitz® is often mistaken for a plant or a remedy. However, the name Retterspitz® now refers to a family business that sells medicinal, over-the-counter products or "remedies". It is therefore a proper name that goes back to Mrs. Margarete Retterspitz.

Margarete Retterspitz lived from 1851 to 1905 and ran a Retterspitz® sanatorium in Switzerland before her death. At a young age, she received a healing liquid from a doctor whose name is no longer known today. She continued to manufacture this healing liquid after his death and sold her product under the name “Universal Healing Wrap Baths by Margarete Retterspitz” together with her husband.

In 1901 the name was declared a trademark. In the following years, the family business Retterspitz® was created in Nuremberg through the takeover of a pharmacist named Hans Scheck, who acquired the recipe for the medicinal water from Margarete Retterspitz. This still exists today. Today, the Retterspitz® company sells the “Retterspitz® Internal”, “Retterspitz® External” and other products. The Retterspitz® is a kind of "healing water" which contains, among other things, thymol, alum, orange oil, lemon oil and tartaric acid.
The Retterspitz® procedure is a naturopathic treatment. There are different areas of application for the two healing solutions "Retterspitz® Internal and External". "Retterspitz® Innerlich" is taken as a liquid and is used for stomach problems such as heartburn and bloating. "Retterspitz® external" is, as the name suggests, used externally in various conditions to support physical therapy. In addition to these solutions, the Retterspitz® company sells numerous other cosmetic and medical products, such as laxative drops, a muscle cream, zinc ointment and a few other products.

Application / indications

The areas of application for Retterspitz® products are very diverse. They vary from stomach problems (Retterspitz® internal) to external use after operations or fractures (Retterspitz® external). A compact overview of the areas of application of the most common Retterspitz® products is now to be given. Further areas of application can be found in the manufacturer information.

Internal application

"Retterspitz® Inner" is a healing product from the Retterspitz® company, which is intended for internal use in the case of stomach problems. The “healing water” contains purified water, thyme oil, orange oil, lemon oil, tartaric acid, citric acid monohydrate, alum, denatured hen's egg, medicinal soap and ethanol.
It is a natural healing product that is taken as a liquid. The area of application includes many symptoms that belong to the stomach ailments. "Retterspitz® Innerlich" is used for irritable stomachs, bloating, stomach pains, heartburn, flatulence, hypoacidification and hyperacidity (acidosis).
According to the manufacturer, Retterspitz®, the solution is intended to restore the natural and healthy gastric environment. The solution is available in bottles of 350 ml or 1 l. The solution should not be used if one of the ingredients is incompatible. Patients with renal insufficiency and who require dialysis should also not take the product, as it contains protein.
Children and infants should only be given the product after consulting a doctor, as there are no data on the harmlessness. The liquid should be shaken well before use, as long storage will result in a fluffy sediment. This comes about through the contained protein.
Adults can take "Retterspitz® Innerlich" 3 to 5 times a day for stomach problems. You can take about one liqueur glass (approx. 20 ml) per dose. Overdosing with “Retterspitz® Innerlich” is not possible. The medicinal water should be taken a quarter of an hour before meals. Children from the age of two can take one tablespoon (15 ml) of Retterspitz® 3 to 5 times a day. Nevertheless, it is advisable to consult the pediatrician before taking. Infants and children under 2 years of age are not allowed to take the product.

External use

"Retterspitz® External" is also a medicinal water from the Retterspitz® company that is produced for external use. It is a natural remedy that is used for various ailments. It contains purified water, thymol, rosemary oil, lemon oil, bergamot oil, orange blossom oil, arnica tincture, tartaric acid, citric acid monohydrate, alum, denatured hen's egg, medical soap, macrogol glycerol hydroxystearate and ethanol.

Like “Retterspitz® Innerlich”, it is available in bottles of 350 ml and 1 l. "Retterspitz® External" is mixed in equal parts with water in a bowl. Soak wraps in this solution and wrap them around the affected parts of the body according to instructions, which can be found in the manufacturer's instructions for the wraps.
The healing water is used to support physical therapy in various conditions. One area of application is painful swelling after operations such as endoprosthesis installation or vascular prosthesis care.
Retterspitz® wraps can also be used for inflammatory swellings or injuries such as ligament strains and muscle pain. Furthermore, the supply after surgical interventions is an area of application. These are mostly orthopedic or trauma surgery interventions for fractures, soft tissue interventions of the shoulder or amputations. Other areas of application are a variety of sports injuries. Retterspitz® wraps are also helpful for milk congestion and breast infections (mastitis).

Rheumatic diseases, the fibromyalgia syndrome or other diseases that are accompanied by painful joint swelling can also be treated with "Retterspitz® External". Furthermore, wound healing disorders or chronic wounds are to be mentioned as areas of application. However, it should be noted that the healing water must not come into direct contact with an open wound. Retterspitz® wraps may only be applied over a professionally applied wound pad. You can use the healing water several times a day until the symptoms subside. In the form of calf wraps, "Retterspitz® External" can also be used for fever.

Wrap

To use "Retterspitz® External", wraps are required, which can be purchased from Retterspitz®. These carry instructions for correct use and correct swaddling with them. In principle, however, you could also use other textiles for winding.
The wraps from Retterspitz® consist of an inner cloth made of 100% linen and soaked in the Retterspitz® solution, as well as an outer textile made of 100% cotton with Velcro fasteners. The outer textile is wrapped tightly around the inner textile and closed with the Velcro fastener.
Different sizes are available that are intended for use on different parts of the body such as the neck, knee or shoulder. Depending on the size of the wrap, the manufacturer notes how much "Retterspitz® External" has to be dissolved with water in order to sufficiently soak the wrap. The wraps should be removed when they are dry at the latest. The process can be repeated any number of times a day. It is important to ensure that you do not wrap too tightly, especially with circulatory disorders, so as not to obstruct the blood flow.

Muscle cream

The Retterspitz® company sells a muscle cream in its range, which mainly contains essential oils and herbal extracts. It is available in 100 g tubes and is used externally. It is used to support physical and physiotherapeutic treatment of muscle, tendon and ligament complaints as well as sports injuries and complaints of the joint system.
The cream can be massaged into the affected body areas 3 to 6 times a day until it is completely absorbed by the skin. It is recommended to keep the skin warm after use. It is also advisable to wrap the painful areas of the body first and apply cream after removing the wrap. This process is said to increase the effectiveness of the muscle cream. You should make sure that you wash your hands carefully after applying the cream, as the cream can cause irritation if it comes into contact with the mucous membrane.
Side effects are not known. If you are intolerant to the ingredients in the muscle cream, it should not be used. It is also not recommended for children under 2 years of age. You should also ensure that you never apply the cream to open wounds, as this can lead to irritation and healing disorders.
