Visual school

Definition school of vision

Facilities at clinics or in ophthalmologic practices are referred to as “visual schools”, in which orthoptists work with ophthalmologists to treat eye movement disorders such as strabismus and eye tremors, poor eyesight and entire diseases affecting the eyes.

The term “visual school” is now rather outdated, as early detection and new therapy methods often avoid the complex training treatment of patients - previously the main activity of the orthoptist. Both children and adults with strabismus come to the vision school. The orthoptist ensures a patient-appropriate examination and treatment.

When examining small children in particular, an increased degree of patience and empathy is necessary, for which there is often not enough time in the rather hectic everyday life of a doctor's office. In large eye clinics there is therefore a "squint ambulance /" visual school "that carries out the entire diagnosis of the squinting disease and, thanks to this delimited treatment area, has fewer patients, so that more time is available for the individual patient.

There is a school of vision in:

  • Pediatric ophthalmology
  • Strabismus treatment
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Tear duct surgery (opening)
  • Treatment of vision problems (amblyopia)

In addition, the visual school department of larger eye clinics is also particularly specialized in the treatment of a child's lens opacity (cataracts) and an artificial lens can be inserted at an early stage and the child's vision can be stabilized.
