Zoloft® is an antidepressant that belongs to the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is characterized in particular by the fact that it does not dampen (sedate) and is also used for a variety of disorders.

A antidepressant intervenes in the brain metabolism. The theory here is that there are often too few of certain messenger substances. The transmitter substance is of particular importance here Serotonin to. Unlike other antidepressants it is Zoloft® one that specializes in serotonin drug. Put simply, transmitters work in such a way that they are released from one cell in order to trigger an effect on another cell, i.e. to convey a message. Then they usually return to their cells and wait for the next assignment. Serotonin reuptake inhibitors now ensure that this special messenger substance remains outside the cell for longer and can therefore do its “work” longer.

dosage

Zoloft® is available in 50mg and 100mg dosages. The starting dose is 50mg per day. The maximum dose should not exceed 200mg per day.

Frequent Side effects of Zoloft® are (especially at the beginning of therapy):

Nausea and vomiting
Diarrhea
Inner unrest
sleep disorders
a headache
dizziness
Loss of appetite

Rare Side effects:

sexual dysfunction
possibly increased liver values (temporary)
Orgasmic disorders

interaction

Overall, there seems to be rarely interactions with Zoloft® (in contrast to other SSRIs):

Neuroleptics: Possibly, the blood levels of the Neuroleptics increase. This increases the risk of side effects such as extrapyramidal disorders.
Lithium: The simultaneous administration of lithium seems to increase the probability of side effects.

Contraindication

Zoloft® must not be used together with so-called Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are given. At least two weeks should elapse between stopping an MAOH and starting Zoloft®.

Also, the drug should not be used in pre-existing conditions Liver damage can be used.
