Definition and description

As a further development from the ideas of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, of Carl Gustav Jung (CG Jung), the founder of analytical psychology and Alfred Adler, the founder of individual psychology, depth psychology includes forms and techniques of treatment for the treatment of conflicts (disorders ) that occur in the (child's) development and negatively affect the relationship between people and one another.

Depth psychological treatment

Depth psychology

As already mentioned above, depth psychological forms of treatment are used when conflicts arise in the course of development that negatively influence the interaction between people. This is the case, for example, when learning problems such as ADD or ADHD place a heavy burden on the family.

Behaviors and, traditionally, negative behaviors are often tolerated. Statements like: he / she doesn't mean it badly ..., he / she can't help it ... or he / she has always been like that ... show that behavior is not approved, but still tolerated . Usually, however, the situation escalates when further problems arise.
Often the reasons for certain behaviors lie in childhood and this is exactly where depth psychological forms of treatment come into play.

In relation to the problem of ADD or ADHD, this means that the behavior of the child has to be examined and the causes questioned in order to explain and understand behavior patterns. Established behavior patterns are often not noticed because they have developed and consolidated over a longer period of time. In daily dealings with one another, these behaviors are not strange, but rather belong to this person. How, when and how they came about can hardly be determined. This is the starting point of the depth psychological treatment, the aim of which is to recognize typical behavior patterns that have a negative effect and to change them or to replace them with alternative behavior patterns.

Unlike in the field of classical psychoanalysis, the now is the present in the field of depth psychology assigned a more significant role.
This means: a problem occurs and it is addressed. The central problem is the starting point of a meeting. The therapist's task is now to provide help for self-help by working towards the solution of the problem. It may be necessary to first define sub-goals that are to be achieved.

This goal (s) cannot be achieved through the therapy sessions alone, which can be in the form of individual or group therapy. Help in the home environment is of particular importance. This is the only way to ensure that typical symptoms of the child are alleviated, modified or replaced by other behaviors. In order for this to happen, an intensive exchange of goals between the therapist and the child, but also between the therapist and the parents, is of particular importance. This explains why a trusting relationship between the child and the therapist, but also between the parents and the therapist, is essential and is one of the essential factors for a successful therapy.
