Small bowel bypass

Small bowel bypass is the shortening of the small intestine to reduce food intake. This method is no longer used today.

Small bowel bypass is now considered obsolete for stomach reduction and is only mentioned here for the sake of completeness.
In this method, the small intestine was shortened a good deal. Either a piece of the small intestine was removed and the remaining part attached to the end of the small intestine (Ileum) sewn on (Jejuno-illeal bypass) or the remaining piece was attached directly to the colon (colon) sewn on (Jejuno-Colic bypass). This technique should only lead to a reduced intake of food (Malabsorption) come. The side effects were significant and some were fatal.
